The top ten visiting countries and regions were the Chinese Mainland, USA, Taiwan, Germany, Australia, Korea, India, the United Kingdom, Russia and Canada. This is a highly comprehensive fair which hosts exhibitors across the lighting product spectrum.

The newest innovations in all areas of the lighting industry will be on display in different thematic zones. In the last edition, the highlighted Connected Living • Smart Home zone featured a range of lighting products and technologies for smart living, including renowned brands such as Osram, Prosperity Group, Tuya, Tmall Genie AI Union Partner Jingxun Software and Bright Power Semiconductor, Broadlink, a strategic partner of Baidu, Opple, Panasonic and PHILIPS. The Smart Lighting & Solutions zone showcased an array of fashionable lighting designs, management systems, control panels and smart lighting design solutions. The Hall of Aurora featured more than 650 renowned brands, including BJB, Megaman and Ledus. The Kladower integrated ceiling lighting showcased in this zone features a unified design in which LED lights allow soft illumination to be distributed evenly through the holes, while the size of the lighting can be adapted according to customer requirements. Other thematic zones include Commercial Lighting, LED Lighting and Residential Lighting.

Hong Kong Autumn Fair Explores Smart Lighting Trends

The 25th Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition), organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), runs until tomorrow (30 October) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Rapid technological advancements have made smart lighting easily accessible, including artificial intelligence-powered sensing systems, creating immense opportunities. Recognising this, the exhibition hosted two Connected Lighting Forums, themed Unlocking New Realms in Connected Lighting (27 October) and Smart Lighting for Healthy Living (28 October). Several lighting brand representatives and industry leaders discussed technological developments, the newest opportunities in lighting, human-centric healthy lighting and its sustainable development.

Cross-platform smart home connectivity protocol revolutionises smart lighting

The forum held on 27 Oct invited such authorities as Mona Xiong, Board Member & Marketing Committee Member, Connectivity Standards Alliance; Head of Ecosystem Partnership, Tuya Smart, and Finn Chen, Vice Team Leader, Connectivity Standards Alliance Member Group China (CMGC); CEO, Longan Link Tech Co., LTD. to discuss smart home trends and innovations.

Ms Xiong introduced the Connectivity Standards Alliance's cross-platform smart home device standard and connectivity protocol Matter. The standard brought a new landscape to the smart home and lighting industry as it supported the operation of smart home devices on Wi-Fi, Thread, and Ethernet networks and was compatible with existing products and ecosystems. Matter had received support throughout the value chain, from chip vendors to service providers, providing interoperable devices and platforms for various suppliers. Before the Matter rollout users would typically need to download different applications to control various devices but the new standard had brought innovative changes and completely solved this problem. With "Matter", users may control their home using a single or multiple applications of their own choice. Matter-based smart lighting and smart home development was a prevailing trend.

Matter had benefited from the contributions of more than 300 member companies, who had shared their mature technologies, best practices, business models and ongoing support. Matter has collaborated with multinational companies such as Google, Amazon, Apple, LG, Samsung, and Tuya Smart. And since October last year Matter had recorded over 23,660 downloads and certified more than 1,850 products or software components, reflecting the rapid development of interconnected smart technology and demonstrating unlimited business opportunities.

During the forum Finn Chen also pointed out that Matter ensured interoperability across major ecosystems in the global market, benefiting both users and retailers. The standard had a unified data model and shared user interface. Matter also permitted external control without relying on the cloud or accounts. He emphasised that Matter let people finally "truly own their own smart homes". Matter was applied mainly in smart home development, he said, hoping that its potential would not be confined to smart home lighting. He envisioned Matter being widely used in different locations and outdoor settings as well.

Potential and opportunities from integrating smart lighting with artificial intelligence

The forum held on 28 Oct delved into environmental lighting and AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) innovations, while exploring the potential of DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) in the IoT era and application of SILA-PLC (Shanghai Pudong Intelligent Lighting Association-Power Line Communication) smart lighting to illuminate a healthier future.

Dr Qiao Yuan, Director, SILA Intelligent Lighting Designer Committee; Vice President, Fudan Planning and Architectural Design Institute, said the design and development of intelligent and smart lighting were becoming increasingly diverse and inspiring. The field embodied the trend of balancing aesthetics and sustainable development, linked by artificial intelligence and aligned with smart city development. The field presented numerous opportunities and the lighting industry needed to keep up with increasingly diverse smart technology developments. Giving one example, he said that should vehicle driving technology become completely autonomous, road lighting technology would undergo ground-breaking changes. He also believed the advancement of artificial intelligence and LED technology would bring about significant changes as the two technologies complemented each other, leading to endless opportunities and driving forces.

Dr Feng Huang, Chair, DALI Alliance China Focus Group; Chief Expert, Standard and Regulation, Signify (China), said application of DALI wired intelligent lighting control system was simple and stable. However, as it evolved, DALI technology that was initially developed only for dimming had expanded to incorporate new technologies equipped with rich IoT (Intelligence of Things) data. DALI would also advance to different technical levels, including connecting with the IoT connectivity protocol of Matter, enabling seamless connectivity between different devices. DALI would also combine with Thread to achieve more efficient, flexible and intelligent lighting control.

Angelica Hsu, Deputy Secretary, SILA; CEO, Liteputer Technology, also said SILA-PLC technology represented a leap forward in the industry and smart lighting would expand its connections and integration between wired and wireless. Zhijun Li, Chairman, Shanghai Pudong Intelligent Lighting Association, predicted that integrating lighting and health lighting with artificial intelligence presented boundless potential. He hoped the perceptual capabilities in lighting systems and vertical applications of AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content) could be fully implemented. He emphasised the importance of understanding big data analysis in the lighting industry and pushing applications to new horizons.

Lighting industry moves towards sustainable development to illuminate a green future

At the forum Towards Sustainability for Luminaires (27 Oct), four guests shared insights on sustainable development of lighting. Jean-Marie Crou, Dlgu Gnral of Syndicat du Luminaire-GIL, explained the concepts and applications of life cycle assessment (LCA), environmental product declarations (EPD), and the repairability index. Frankie Tsang and Eric Shiu, Associate Directors, TinoKwan Lighting Consultants Ltd, gave perspectives on balancing aesthetics and sustainability in lighting design and showed how aesthetics and environmental considerations could go hand in hand in lighting design. Franklin Yu, Director, Hong Kong Green Building Council; Founder & Director, Singular Studio Limited, discussed key points in lighting design for green cities, emphasising the need for balanced considerations of economics, environment and socio-cultural aspects in every lighting design to achieve genuine sustainability.

The Autumn Lighting Fair debuted the Connected Lighting Zone this year, highlighting smart and IoT-enabled lighting solutions from more than 20 renowned international companies and brands, including Leedarson, Midea, Snappy, Quectel, as well as members of DALI Alliance and Shanghai Pudong Intelligent Lighting Association.

Autumn Lighting Fair, Outdoor and Tech Light Expo and Eco Expo Asia Draw Some 60,000 Buyers​

The 26th Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition), the 9th Hong Kong International Outdoor and Tech Light Expo, and the 19th Eco Expo Asia, jointly organised by HKTDC, Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd and co-organised by the Environment and Ecology Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), have come to a successful conclusion. The three exhibitions attracted some 60,000 buyers from 150 countries and regions, signifying Hong Kong's status as an international conference and exhibition centre.

Sophia Chong, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC, said: "The recent Policy Address proposed several measures to enhance Hong Kong's status as an international trade centre. The fairs created cross-industry sourcing opportunities and attracted some 60,000 buyers in total. The number of buyers from Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Italy and the Netherlands increased from last year. Eco Expo Asia also drew many new buyer groups, including from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), showing that ASEAN and Middle Eastern buyers view Hong Kong as an important trading and sourcing platform. These fairs further solidified Hong Kong's role as a trade centre which also promotes green and low-carbon development."

Survey shows optimism on sales in the lighting industry​

An independent survey of over 710 exhibitors and buyers at the Autumn Lighting Fair and Outdoor and Tech Light Expo revealed that respondents hold an optimistic outlook, with 61% respondents expecting overall sales to grow in the next 12-24 months, and 34% expecting sales to remain unchanged.

For traditional markets, respondents were mainly optimistic about Australia and the Pacific Islands (74%), Korea (72%), and Taiwan (57%). Among emerging markets, the industry was primarily positive on Middle East (88%), Latin America (80%) and Russia (64%).

In terms of trends in lighting products, 61% respondents foresee that artificial intelligence (AI) is the driving factor of industry growth. Most respondents (43%) believed energy-efficient lighting control solutions to have great potential in the smart lighting industry in next two years, followed by home automation and smart lighting control systems (36%), wireless lighting control systems (27%) and outdoor smart security lighting systems (26%).

Hall of Connected Lighting with international brands launching new products​

Under the theme "Light & Life", the twin lighting fairs showcased innovative products and solutions that integrate lighting with life. The Autumn Lighting Fair revealed industry trends, such as sustainable development, healthy living, and innovative design. The Hall of Connected Lighting at the Autumn Lighting Fair featured over 50 internationally renowned brands from eight countries and regions.

Amongst them, Shanghai Pudong Intelligent Lighting Association and the DALI Alliance collectively showcased numerous key brands to present their intelligent lighting ecosystem. Signify from the Netherlands, Tridonic from Austria and TUYA Smart from Mainland China, among others, also launched new products at the Fair. The hall was not only popular among buyers but also elevated the fair to a higher level.

Tridonic GmbH CEO Hugo Rohner stated, "This year, we have met more new buyers from Europe and the Middle East. The Fair also provides a perfect platform for us to announce the launch of lichtMONITOR in Asia, which has attracted the attention of international buyers."

The business atmosphere at both lighting fairs was enthusiastic and lively. At the Autumn Lighting Fair, the Mainland China exhibitor Jason Yan, Sales Manager of Hangzhou Sky-Lighting Co., Ltd. stated that the number of buyers visiting their booth increased by 20-30%. During the first day of the Fair, more than 10 buyers from Europe and North America expressed their intention to place orders. He expected that actual orders received after the Autumn Lighting Fair will amount to around US$40-50 million.

This year, the Outdoor and Tech Light Expo introduced a Smart Pole and Solution zone. Liu Jie, Manager of Jiangsu Fute Lighting Group Co., Ltd. from Jiangsu Gaoyou Lighting Association, said: "Many buyers from Saudi Arabia, UAE, India, Vietnam and Argentina have expressed serious interest in sourcing our smart streetlights and signal lights. Potential orders under negotiation are up to US$10 million."

A buyer from Canada, David Daniels, President of Etlin-Daniels Electrical Devices Inc. has been visiting the Spring Lighting Fair and Autumn Lighting Fair every year: "I have found two potential suppliers through the Click2Match platform, and I plan to buy US$450,000 worth of area lights and down lights from them. I am also interested in new models of LED panel lights and LED tri-proof lights presented by my existing supplier at the Fair, and I'll buy US$800,000 worth of lighting products from this supplier."

Eco Expo Asia fully promotes energy conservation and waste reduction​

Under the theme of "Fostering Green Innovations for Carbon Neutrality", Eco Expo Asia focused on three areas that echo the recent Policy Address, namely new energy, waste management and circular economy, and ESG-related services.

The demand for environmentally friendly products or technologies is increasingly growing across various industries. As a leading expo in the green industry, Eco Expo Asia is supported by governments, industry associations and enterprises from around the world. In addition to local buyers, this year's expo also invited suppliers who provide services to mainland and ASEAN governments to procure green technologies and products. Other industries attending the Fair to source green products and services included infrastructure, real estate, property management, logistics, hotels, department stores and finance.

Hong Kong exhibitor Alex Huen, General Manager of GMI Motors Ltd said: "Last year at Eco Expo Asia, we received over 20 enquiries from Europe, Southeast Asia and Mainland China, resulting in five vehicle sales amounting to HK$8 million. This year, we estimate an increase of 15-20%, in view of the more optimistic sentiment. The Click2Match platform has been invaluable for us. We have successfully arranged five meetings with overseas buyers on the first day."

Keith Ang, Managing Director of Transco-PAC Transport & Environmental Pte Ltd said: "We aim to secure deals with a total budget of S$500,000 (HK$ 3 million). We are particularly interested in solutions provided by Hong Kong companies, including waste management for a government initiative in Singapore, as well as textile recycling solution." Another buyer Ruuth Sonnia Agustina M, Digital Technology Manager of PT Moda Integrasi Transportasi Jabodetabek in Indonesia, was interested to procure 50 EV chargers worth up to HK$100,000 from a Hong Kong company for the charging stations that they are planning to build at three train stations in the country.

Igniting cross-industry business opportunities through three fairs​

Organised by the HKTDC, the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) and the Hong Kong International Outdoor and Tech Light Expo formed a world-renowned lighting marketplace, attracting some 3,000 exhibitors collectively and more than 40,000 buyers and more than 10,000 buyers, respectively. Eco Expo Asia, co-organised by the HKTDC and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd., drew over 300 exhibitors and over 8,500 buyers.

Under the EXHIBITION+ hybrid mode, exhibitors and buyers can engage in online business negotiations and matching through the Click2Match smart business matching platform until 8 November for the two lighting fairs and until 9 November for Eco Expo Asia.
