Set to become the world’s tallest building, at an incredible height of over 1 kilometer, construction of the Jeddah Tower (formerly known as the Kingdom Tower) in Saudi Arabia recommenced recently following a six-year hiatus. To celebrate, the portion of the structure which had already been completed (approximately one third of the planned height) was illuminated for three weeks this September, which also coincided with the 94th Saudi National Day. Creating a true spectacular, the building was adorned with 60 ADJ Hydro Beam X12 moving head fixtures, which were used to fill the night sky with piercing aerial effects that could be seen from a distance of 5+ kilometers.
Located to the north of Jeddah, the new tower is planned as the centerpiece of the Jeddah Economic City project, a substantial development of both commercial and residential real estate. The vision of Saudi Arabian prince and businessman Al-Waleed bin Talal, the tower will house a hotel, luxury condominiums, office space and an observation deck. It was designed by Adrian Smith, the American architect who also designed the Burj Khalifa, the current tallest building in the world, and is being constructed by the Saudi Binladin Group.
To mark the recommencement of building work on the tower, the company wanted to create a spectacle that would renew interest and anticipation for the project both in Jeddah and around the world. For this they brought in HAV Pro, a specialist AVL supplier founded in 1988 and based in the city. The company, which operates throughout the Middle East, has both integration and live events / production arms, the latter of which is managed by Ian Hill. Originally hailing from Scotland, Ian moved to Saudi Arabi for a 6-month contract in the late ‘90s and has never left!
“The Jeddah Tower is a huge project for this region, so, naturally, every local company would love the opportunity to light it,” comments Ian. “Which means we are very proud that we got there first! HAV Pro is very well established in Jeddah, and throughout the Middle East, so we have had the opportunity to work for the Saudi Binladen Group on numerous previous occasions. Nevertheless, we were honored to be invited to tender for this high-profile project and very pleased to have won the contract.”
Three elements were drawn together to create an impactful nighttime display at the Jeddah Tower construction site. Firstly, the existing structure was illuminated in green, the national color of Saudi Arabia. Secondly, high-definition video footage was projected onto a tall and narrow rectangular section at the center of the structure. Finally, to create true ‘wow factor’, the 60 Hydro Beam X12 luminaires were used to generate moving aerial effects, which filled the night sky all around the site. Eight of the fixtures were positioned on the ground at each side of the building, shooting directly up into the sky, while the remaining 44 units were mounted to the structure of the building itself, framing the central video display.
Lighting Designer Aslan Mehdiyev was responsible for programming the show. A native of Azerbaijan, he has extensive experience of working throughout Asia and Eastern Europe lighting concerts, productions and special events. Having moved to Saudi Arabia, Aslan has worked as an in-house Lighting Designer for HAV Pro for the past four years. For the Jeddah Tower project he programmed a series of impressive movement effects that filling the sky with piercing beams. Time-coded with the video graphics, the show ran on a continuous loop from sunset until sunrise for three consecutive weeks.
“I originally wanted to use a competitor’s fixture,” admits Aslan, “but our CEO, Bassam Halwani, had been impressed by the Hydro Beam X12 and wanted us to try using it. So, we took a test fixture to the tower site, and it was more than capable of producing the aerial effect we wanted to create. Having now completed the project, I can say that I have also been very impressed with the fixtures. I designed the show using visualization software in advance and the Hydro Beam X12s performed in real like just like in the visualizer, which isn’t always the case for fixture I’ve used in the past. The movement is fast and smooth, the colors are very good, and, although I didn’t use them for this project, there are two nice prism options. This makes for a very versatile fixture, which is also very powerful. I was very happy with the Hydro Beam X12.”
Part of ADJ’s popular Hydro Series of IP65-rated ‘outdoor ready’ automated luminaires, the Hydro Beam X12 is a dedicated beam fixture designed to create stunning aerial effects. Harnessing the power of the latest Philips® Platinum 12R LL MSD Discharge Lamp technology, focused through high quality optics, it creates a piercing beam of light with a tight 2-degree beam angle. A carefully curated selection of beam-shaping tools deliver the functionality that lighting designers need, while allowing the fixture to remain compact and agile. It features 14 colors + white, with support for split colors and bidirectional scrolling. A static GOBO wheel features 16 patterns (plus open) optimized for aerial effects, including four beam reducers, and offers GOBO shake and bidirectional GOBO scrolling effects. The fixture also offers motorized focus, a frost filter to create a wash effect, and two rotating prisms (6-facet linear and 24-facet circular). It has a robust construction, designed for touring and event production applications in the most testing environments.
“The conditions in Jeddah can be harsh, with extreme heat, lots of airborne dust and very high humidity,” states Ian. “In fact, September is actually the worst month of the year for humidity! But all the fixtures worked flawlessly with no problems at all across the three-week run. The beams looked incredible, and the display was the talk of the town. On the evening of the launch, the Project Manager from Saudi Binladin Group drove around five kilometers down towards the city and he said the beams looked amazing. He was very happy, and of course, what matters the most is that our clients are happy!”
The light show was a resounding success. Not only did it look spectacular, but also achieved its goal of revitalizing interest in the Jeddah Tower both locally and internationally. In addition, it served as a testament to the potential offered by ADJ’s Hydro Beam X12 to perform flawlessly in extremely challenging conditions on a high-profile international project.

Designed for the creation of piercing aerial effects, ADJ’s new Ultra Beam Bar 12CW is a compact linear entertainment lighting fixture that features 12 cool white LEDs. Each LED generates a narrow beam of bright white light and when all 12 are lit simultaneously the fixture creates a ‘curtain of light’ effect. The LEDs can also be controlled independently, allowing animated chase patterns running across one or more fixtures to be programmed.
The Ultra Beam Bar 12CW features 12 x 20-Watt 6200K (cool white) LEDs which each output a distinct beam of light with a concise 5° beam angle. Smooth dimming control allows each LED pixel to be controlled separately, either via DMX or utilizing the fixture’s 13 built-in chase programs. A ‘pixel flip’ mode is also included, which inverts chase patterns to run in the same direction regardless of the orientation of the unit.
A flexible fixture, the Ultra Beam Bar 12CW can be hung, vertically or horizontally, or placed directly on a stage or riser. To facilitate the latter, the unit is fitted with rubber feet, allowing it to shoot its beams vertically upwards. It also features magnetic end caps, which allow two or more units to be placed side-by-side and precisely aligned. The fixture’s pixel pitch is 85.5mm, which remains consistent when two fixtures are aligned using the magnetic system, allowing for a continuous run of pixels to be created using any number of units. The fixture is also supplied with a pair of variable-angle mounting brackets, which attach to the end caps with thumb screws and can stand directly on the floor, mount to a wall or ceiling, or attach to clamps for truss mounting.
Locking power and 5-pin DMX input sockets are located at one side of the fixture, while the corresponding output sockets are positioned at the other side, allowing for neat and concise cable runs. The power output socket allows up to 32 fixtures to be linked to a single outlet @ 230V (17 @ 120V). The unit also features a dedicated lens slot, which can be used to install a 40-degree frost filter (sold separately) to diffuse the output and create a homogenized wash output in place of the defined individual beams.
“Featuring powerful 20-Watt cool white LEDs, the Ultra Beam Bar 12CW creates intense beams that look incredible on a haze-filled stage or nightclub dancefloor,” comments ADJ USA’s Director of Sales, Alfred Gonzales. “With full pixel control, it offers huge creative potential to lighting designers, while its compact, lightweight and flexible design make it easy to integrate into any house rig or touring production.”
The Ultra Beam Bar 12CW is available now from ADJ USA and it is due to begin shipping from ADJ Europe next month (November 2024).

The new ADJ ElectraPix Series is a collection of battery-powered and wirelessly controllable LED wash fixtures designed to deliver maximum creativity and versatility. Each model in the range features 20-Watt RGBAL+UV main LEDs, which are complemented by additional RGB LEDs to generate a background glow effect. The series comprises the linear ElectraPix Bar 8 and ElectraPix Bar 16 as well as the complementary ElectraPix Par 7, which all feature robust IP65-rated enclosures and a host of advanced features, including rechargable Lithium-ion batteries, Aria X2 wireless management system and a flexible L Track rigging system.
All three ElectraPix fixtures incorporate the same individually controllable, color-calibrated 20-Watt hex color (red, green, blue, amber, lime + UV) primary LEDs. The inclusion of the lime LED element allows for an enhanced CRI and variable white color temperature control of 2,700K ~ 9,900K. Meanwhile, the UV element provides the ‘black light’ effect which causes white and neon colored décor and clothing to glow when used alone, and can also be combined with the other elements to create vibrant colors like hot pink, deep purple, and electric blue. The primary LEDs are surrounded by 0.2-Watt RGB color mixing LEDs, which are mounted behind opaque plastic and generate a background glow effect. This provides Lighting Designers with enhanced creative potential, while foreground and background color macros aid easy programming.
Each ElectraPix unit features a high-capacity internal Lithium-ion battery, which can be used for cable free operation. The units are also fitted with standard locking power input and output sockets for situations where longer run times are required. In addition, they feature dedicated charging ports which slot directly into a compatible charging base (these can be integrated into a road case to allow convenient in-case charging). The fixtures themselves are extremely rugged and IP65-rated, allowing temporary outdoor use in any weather conditions. They also feature the flexible L Track rigging system, which allows a variety of accessories (including truss clamps) to lock quickly and securely into place in any of the L Track slots located down the sides of the fixtures (are rear of the bars).
As well as standard 5-pin DMX input and thru connections, all ElectraPix fixtures also feature an integrated Aria X2 wireless transceiver. ADJ’s new Aria X2 technology is a wireless management suite which offers a range of useful tools, including stable wireless DMX control, OTA firmware updates, and remote fixture configuration.
Compact yet powerful, the ElectraPix Bar 8 is a 0.5-meter linear fixture. It incorporates eight primary LEDs and 32 background LEDs. With a native beam angle of 17-degrees it generates a concise wash but is also supplied with a 20-degree diffusion filter that slides into a dedicated slot on the front of the unit and locks securely into place. It is also supplied with a removable glare shield as well as a pair of variable-angle mounting brackets which attach via L-Track and can also serve as floor stands.
The ElectraPix Bar 16 offers the same advanced feature set as the ElectraPix Bar 8 but in a larger 1-meter-long format. It features 16 primary LEDs alongside 66 background LEDs. Offering the same versatility as its smaller sibling (including the diffusion filter, glare shield and mounting brackets), this powerful and versatile fixture offers huge potential for a wide variety of stage and event lighting applications.
Both linear models feature a convenient locking mechanism, with tabs on one end and slots of the other, which allows adjacent fixtures to link together to provide seamless LED spacing across multiple units. In addition, the Accu-Stand VFB dedicated floor-standing base plate is available, which slots onto one end of a linear fixture and secures it in place using L Track locks. The floor stand can be used to support up to two ElectraPix Bar 16 fixtures linked end-to-end, or any combination of ElectraPix Bar 8 and ElectraPix Bar 16 fixtures adding up to 32 LEDs in total.
Rounding out the ElectraPix Series, the ElectraPix Par 7 is a complementary LED par fixture. Packed with all the advanced features of the bar models, it boasts seven main LEDs paired with 29 background LEDs, which are packaged in a compact and lightweight fixture. It features an integral hanging bracket / floor stand and offers a concise 17-degree beam angle but is supplied as standard with a gel frame and diffusion filter.
Each model in the series is available individually as well as in road cased packages. The ElectraPix Par 7 Pak features six of the par fixtures housed in a durable road case that has separate charging slots for each fixture as well as additional storage space for cables and accessories. Meanwhile, the ElectraPix Bar 8 Pak and ElectraPix Bar 16 Pak each feature four of the respective linear fixtures housed in a robust road case with dedicated charging slots for each fixture. All three paks are supplied with an ADJ UC-IR24 remote control that allows simple color selection as well as a power cable which plugs into the side of the case for in-case charging.
“Ideal for a wide variety of production and rental applications, the ElectraPix series fixtures are all bright, robust and versatile,” comments ADJ USA’s Director of Sales, Alfred Gonzales. “Each model offers the creative versatility of individually controllable hex color LEDs, which incorporate both lime and UV chips, as well as background RGB glow LEDs. This is combined with the practical versatility of rechargeable batteries, Aria X2 wireless, IP65-rated casings and L Track rigging to provide LED wash fixtures ready for any stage or event.”
The ElectraPix fixtures are available now from ADJ USA and are due to begin shipping from ADJ Europe in mid-to-late September 2024.
