Cree LED, a Penguin Solutions brand (Nasdaq: PENG), today announced the launch of its new CV28D LEDs with FusionBeam™ Technology, a groundbreaking advancement for the LED signage market. The CV28D LED combines the latest through-hole and surface-mount (SMD) RGB LED technology, delivering superior directionality, image quality, and resolution in a durable, easy-to-assemble package.
This innovation marks a major leap forward for information displays, providing new levels of clarity and contrast versus current through-hole LED displays. With this high resolution, CV28D-enabled signs can now display icons, photos, logos, and even video, bringing unprecedented versatility to signs that can currently only display text or simple shapes.
Compared to traditional through-hole LEDs, the CV28D enables displays with 2.5 times the resolution, equivalent to the leap from standard definition 480p to full HD 1080p video. At the heart of the CV28D’s performance, FusionBeam Technology simultaneously blends individual RGB LED dies into a single, uniform color and then sends it only to the intended audience. The new LEDs also feature advanced directionality, focusing light on the intended viewer while reducing light trespass and pollution to four times less than standard RGB SMD LEDs.
“We are proud to introduce our CV28D LEDs with FusionBeam Technology, the first LED solution to truly bridge the gap between through-hole and SMD technologies in the LED signage market,” said Joe Clark, President of Cree LED. “By combining the best qualities of both, CV28D enables signage manufacturers to create displays with higher resolution, better directionality and improved durability, all while reducing light pollution. FusionBeam Technology LEDs represent the next frontier for LED information signs, and we’re excited to see how our customers leverage our technology in their future designs.”
CV28D LEDs offer single LED package per pixel and provide ease of assembly and IP68-rated dustproof and waterproof reliability. With a form factor of only 4.3 mm in height, they enable significantly thinner and lighter displays and signs — making them ideal for a wide range of outdoor applications.

Cree LED, an SGH company (Nasdaq: SGH), today announced the city of Santiago de Querétaro in central Mexico has tapped IDC Componentes (IDC2) and Ilumiled to upgrade all of its downtown lighting—a project that will replace 1600 sodium-based lamps with LED fixtures. Authorized by the state and municipal governments, the upgrade maintains the downtown area’s light color and softness while improving the light uniformity and cutting power consumption by more than half over the next five to 10 years.
Cree LED’s JR5050C E Class LEDs, utilizing a 2200K CCT, were selected to preserve the warm ambiance of the original sodium lamps while delivering higher light output. The new fixtures incorporate Sciolux LED modules from IDC2, which are projected to reduce power consumption by 58% over the next decade, resulting in annual energy savings of approximately $80,000 USD.
“Maintaining the integrity of lighting in our beautiful 18th century downtown area was vital, but we also recognized the need to modernize with better energy efficiency,” said Luis Nava, Mayor of Santiago de Querétaro. “Working with IDC Componentes and Ilumiled enabled us to find the right LEDs to keep the look of our lighting consistent while offering us needed energy and cost savings. We are seeing double the light output with less than half of the energy consumption.”
“The lighting upgrade for the city of Santiago de Querétaro posed a unique challenge, as it placed a heavy emphasis on the warmth and color of the lighting,” said Bryan Chavoya, Sales Manager, IDC Componentes. “Working with our local partner, Ilumiled, enabled us to capture all the subtleties—not only by delivering industry-leading LED technology from Cree LED that increases brightness and energy efficiency, but also by maintaining the consistent look and feel of the city’s historic downtown area.”
Joe Clark, President, Cree LED added, “We are excited to see Cree LED innovation play a key role in such a stunning and historically sensitive installation. Our JR5050C series was the perfect choice for this project, delivering industry-leading energy efficiency and exceptional light quality that respects the original aesthetic. With our versatile outdoor lighting portfolio, Cree LED continues to offer solutions that meet the unique needs of our customers.”

Cree LED’s precision dimming is a new production technique that addresses unacceptable light output and hue variations when dimming parallel strings of LEDs to low current. These light output variations are caused by normal production variations in characteristics of LEDs and can be reduced substantially with proper system design.
- A novel production technique has been introduced to address the problems of inconsistent light output and hue experienced when dimming LEDs to low current
- With precision dimming, manufacturers gain simplified control over voltage, light output and color rendering
- This method enables precise adjustment of key color rendering parameters while reducing the need for multiple bins
- TM-21 reported L80 >102K hrs lifetimes across all 2835 LEDs
When operated in parallel strings, as is common in many linear LED designs, LEDs driven at relatively low currents (e.g., less than 20 mA for 3-V mid-power LEDs) will exhibit unacceptable light output and hue variations across the strings. These light output variations are caused by normal production variations in characteristics of LEDs and can be reduced substantially with proper system design.
Lighting designers, specifiers, architects and end users have observed this inconsistency issue while dimming in many common linear-style LED designs, including cove accent lighting, wall texture graze lighting, indirect lighting and in some recessed linear general illumination.
Other LED manufacturers tackle LED inconsistency by conducting two rounds of forward voltage sorting. First, they perform sorting during the binning process at the specified current, and then they repeat the sorting at a lower current. However, this approach introduces additional voltage bins that can be challenging to effectively manage during production.
Precision dimming provides manufacturers of no-compromise, specification-grade lighting with a straightforward solution. The precision dimming system offers a total of four bins: J, K, L and M. Moreover, for each combination of CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) and CRI (Color Rendering Index) of an LED equipped with precision dimming, there will consistently be a maximum of two precision dimming bins.
Cree LED tapped into our extensive LED performance and manufacturing knowledge to address this issue of inconsistent LED dimming. Our engineering team has developed a new method to bring consistency for low-input intensity and color performance-critical applications. Industry standard 3-dimensional binning (chromaticity, voltage and flux) is greatly improved by the introduction of a simple fourth dimension that Cree LED calls Precision Dimming.
Precision Dimming provides the easiest solution to manufacturers of no-compromise, specification-grade lighting. There are only four total Precision Dimming bins: J, K, L & M. In addition, each CCT & CRI combination of an LED with Precision Dimming will only ever have two Precision Dimming bins.
