The IZURA pendant luminaire, made from recycled materials, operates with exceptional efficiency and provides transparent lifecycle information. With this, Zumtobel secured a win at the German Sustainability Award 2025. The award, now in its 17th year, aims to encourage companies to promote sustainable development.

The luminaire incorporates plastic-free reflectors made of biocomposites and a housing crafted from recycled steel. Its sustainable product design is based on the Zumtobel Circular Design Rules (CDR), which outline guidelines for sustainable product development from material sourcing to recycling. IZURA was developed specifically with the principles of a circular economy in mind and can be produced under low-energy conditions, advancing ambitious climate protection goals.

Transparency Across the Product Lifecycle​

Zumtobel equipped IZURA with a digital product passport containing key information about its production, materials, and maintenance, ensuring maximum transparency throughout its lifecycle. Accessible online, the passport also provides guidance on handling, maintenance, and recycling of components, including instructions for disassembly and disposal, along with usage recommendations. In addition, Zumtobel offers various after-sales services, such as repairs, replacement parts, and warranty management, further extending the product's lifespan. In the future, the digital product passport will also include an authenticity certificate to protect buyers from counterfeiting.

Combining Sustainability with Individuality​

With IZURA, Zumtobel demonstrates how sustainability and individuality can go hand in hand. The concept pendant luminaire, unveiled at Light + Building in 2024, features a modular design that allows for extensive customization. Digital profile printing enables the production of even the smallest quantities. Customers can fully personalize the housing design, including color and surface structure. Patterns, photos, and text can be easily integrated, and even specific Pantone shades can be matched.

The modular structure consists of just 40 components and requires no welding, ensuring that individual parts can be easily replaced. This approach minimizes resource use and maximizes sustainability. Equipped with the latest generation of DALI drivers, IZURA can be wirelessly controlled via an app or remote control, offering flexible dimming and seamless integration into building management systems.

ABB and Zumtobel Group Partner to Advance Smart Building Solutions and DC Industry Applications
This spring, Zumtobel won four awards for outstanding product design. The company’s ARTELEA free-standing luminaire won the iF Design Award in the “Free-standing Luminaire” category and, together with the SLOTLIGHT infinity II continuous row luminaire, was also awarded in the “Product Design” category at the Red Dot Award. In addition, its IZURA concept luminaire won the Red Dot Award in the new “Design Concept” category.

Not only did Zumtobel’s new products impress visitors at the Light + Building trade fair, but three of its luminaires also won over the judges at this year’s iF Design Award and Red Dot Award. The ARTELEA free-standing luminaire scored highly in both awards.

ARTELEA: sustainable and modular​

The ARTELEA free-standing luminaire is fully optimized for flexibility and circulation capability. The free-standing luminaire was developed in accordance with the Zumtobel Circular Design Rules (CDR) and is both the first Zumtobel product and one of the first luminaires on the market to receive the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard Version 4.0 certification. Valuable raw materials such as aluminium, steel and sheet steel make the ARTELEA highly recyclable. The modular design enables it to be dismantled easily and in a non-destructive way, and also makes it easy to replace or reuse individual components. This saves on resources and maximises the product’s time of use.

SLOTLIGHT infinity II: a reliable basis for a wide range of applications​

The SLOTLIGHT infinity II light line also won the Red Dot Award in the “Product Design” category. It has also been developed in accordance with the Circular Design Rules for indoor use and use in protected outdoor areas, and is available as a recessed, surface-mounted or pendant luminaire. The modular design enables it to be flexibly installed as a continuous line, around corners or in creative installations, such as an X or a T shape. The structure is comprised of just three components: channel, LED bar and optics. As the channel is supplied empty, it can be flexibly equipped and customised on site to meet individual requirements.

IZURA: new standards for individual, recyclable design​

The IZURA concept luminaire, which was presented for the first time at the Light + Building 2024 trade fair, impressed judges at the Red Dot Award and was honoured in the “Design Concept” category. IZURA combines several groundbreaking technologies of the future in a single unique luminaire, while meeting all requirements for human-centred light in a room. Its sustainable concept is based on a modular product design that does not require any welding or glueing. When developing the IZURA, Zumtobel worked together with a number of innovative partners, who contributed their expertise to the project. The plastic-free reflector holder is made of degradable biocomposites from FluidSolids and the housing is crafted from recyclable sheet steel, in line with circular economy principles. Using digital colour printing from Typico, the IZURA housing can be customised and tailored precisely to each customer’s requirements. An app from the Zurich-based company World of Pi, which links to the luminaire via a QR code, makes it easy to track, care for, maintain and recycle.

FluidSolids specialises in developing biocomposites. The company contributed to developing the IZURA by supplying biodegradable, plastic-free biocomposites made from agricultural and industrial side streams such as nut shells, wood fibres and coffee grounds. These materials were used to manufacture the reflector holders and are in line with the IZURA’s sustainability and circular economy principles.

Thanks to World of Pi, every IZURA luminaire can be traceable and is easier to maintain, repair and professionally recycle. The Zurich-based company, which provides manufacturers with an operating system for the circular economy, has linked each IZURA to an app via a QR code. This gives the luminaire a digital identity that stays with it right through to the recycling stage. Among other things, the app provides access to the luminaire’s digital product passport (DPP), which will be a mandatory EU regulation from 2027, and provides information on the supply chain, carbon footprint, repair options and material composition.

Typico, Zumtobel’s long-standing manufacturing partner, enables the IZURA’s housing to be customised in various colours and materials, such as wood, concrete or leather. Innovative digital printing technology means that customers can choose from a wide range of customisation options, even for small orders. This is what makes every IZURA luminaire so unique.

IZURA

The Zumtobel Group was also confronted with challenging economic conditions during the 2023/24 financial year, which had a negative impact, above all, on the components business. The Lighting Segment made good progress in this challenging market environment with only a slight 1.5% reduction in revenues. In total, the company recorded a decline of 6.8% in revenues to EUR 1,127.0 million, after an adjustment for foreign exchange effects the decline equalled 5.8%. Adjusted EBIT totalled EUR 57.3 million, compared with EUR 84.3 million in the previous year. The adjusted EBIT margin equalled 5.1% and reached the middle of the expected range between 4 and 6%. Below the line, net profit totalled EUR 24.7 million.

Revenue development in the segments​

Revenues in the Lighting Segment declined slightly by 1.5% to EUR 889.3 million in 2023/24. Lower sales volumes and negative foreign exchange effects were largely offset by efficient price management and volume growth in higher margin markets. The Components Segment, in contrast, recorded a reduction of 18.5% in revenues to EUR 299.4 million. The main underlying factors were the weaker demand that followed previous stock build-ups by customers and the resulting intensified price competition.

The 2023/24 financial year brought revenue declines in nearly all regions compared with the above-average good performance in 2022/23. The D/A/CH region was slightly below the previous year, whereby sound growth in Switzerland was contrasted by a reduction in Germany. Revenues in the Southern and Eastern Europe region were lower year-on-year, with particularly high declines in Italy and Spain. Moderate growth was recorded in Belgium and Norway The Asia & Pacific region reported the largest declines, especially in Australia, China and Macau. Revenues in the America & MEA region fell substantially as a result of disappointing sales in the USA.

Earnings​

The adjusted cost of goods sold reflected a reduction in materials costs and inventory write-downs. Development costs rose by EUR 4.7 million to EUR 68.0 million in 2023/24. Adjusted selling and administrative expenses (incl. research) increased by EUR 10.1 million to EUR –346.0 million, whereby the cost drivers also included the increase in personnel costs which resulted from collective agreements.

Adjusted Group EBIT fell from EUR 84.3 million to EUR 57.3 million in 2023/24, and the adjusted EBIT margin equalled 5.1%. Profit before tax totalled EUR 34.9 million (previous year: EUR 66.0 million), and income taxes equalled EUR –10.2 million (previous year: EUR –6.1 million). Net profit fell to EUR 24.7 million. Earnings per share for the shareholders of Zumtobel Group AG (basic EPS based on 43.0 million shares) declined to EUR 0.57 (previous year: EUR 1.39).

Solid equity ratio and dividend​

The balance sheet total of the Zumtobel Group was nearly unchanged year-on-year at EUR 987.2 million as of 30 April 2024 (2022/23: EUR 1,002.4 million). The equity ratio improved slightly from 42.1% to 43.1% as of 30 April 2024. In view of the EUR 24.7 million net profit generated in this difficult operating environment, the Management Board plans to make a recommendation to the Supervisory Board and, in turn, to the General Meeting on 2 August 2024 to distribute a dividend of 25 euro cents per share for the 2023/24 financial year. That represents roughly 43.7% of net profit (2022/23: approx. 30%) and, based on the closing price for the 2023/24 financial year, a dividend yield of 4.2%.

Outlook on 2024/25: Revenues slightly above previous year and adjusted EBIT margin of 3–6%​

The management of the Zumtobel Group continues to see the current geopolitical and economic situation as stressed, a situation which makes it difficult to predict economic developments in the 2024/25 financial year. The further course of the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Near East, the development of energy, raw materials and transport prices, and inflation and interest rate trends will have a significant influence on the global economy and, in turn, on the success of the Zumtobel Group. Against this backdrop and with reference to the above-mentioned uncertainties, the Management Board expects moderate revenue growth at least slightly above the prior year level for the 2024/25 financial year. The adjusted EBIT margin is expected to range from 3 to 6%.
The European Patent Office (EPO) once again confirms that Tridonic and Zumtobel Lighting, two brands of the Zumtobel Group, rank among Austria’s leading innovators: The technology subsidiary Tridonic is one of the top 3 applicants for patents. Zumtobel takes seventh place in the annual ranking, which was published in mid-March 2024.

Innovation drivers of the Group

Tridonic came second in the EPO ranking with 60 patent applications in 2023, which makes it one of the most innovative companies in Austria. With this excellent result, the component manufacturer underlines its leading position as a technology driver in the lighting industry. Overall, the subsidiary of the Zumtobel Group holds 2,430 patents and patent applications – in addition to industrial property rights at the EPO, these also include a large number of CN and US patents. With 36 new patent applications, Zumtobel Lighting achieved seventh place among the top applicants from Austria in 2023.

The purpose of patent applications is to protect the company’s know-how and to further expand market leadership also at an international level.

Vorarlberg in fourth place

Thanks to its innovative strength, the Zumtobel Group also supports the high patent density of the federal province of Vorarlberg, where the company is headquartered. In a comparison of all Austrian federal provinces, Vorarlberg ranks fourth in the number of applications for patents, with a total of 277 applications.

Austria in seventh place

Weighted by population density, the ranking of European patent applications (264 applications) shows Austria in seventh place, immediately following Germany. Switzerland holds the number one position (1,085). Overall, Austrian companies submitted 2,355 patent applications in 2023. The number of patent applications has barely changed compared with the previous year (2,381) (minus 1.1% compared with 2022).

Keyture applications

The modular structured, multifunctional software suite is based on intelligent sensors and includes solutions to maximise energy reduction (control), provide the necessary information for maintenance and the monitoring of sustainability goals (report), real-time space optimization (view), identify and follow objects (locate), as well as environmental and operational excellence monitoring (sense). The focus will be on the “Industry & Retail” application area.

After the first presentation at the Light + Building trade fair, Keyture will be available to customers starting in autumn 2024. It will form the core portfolio for Smart Building Solutions. The Zumtobel Group acquired the rights to the SiteWorx IoT software developed by Digital Lumens (with exclusive rights for Europe) in autumn 2023 and has now successfully integrated this software in the product offering for its Smart Building Solutions.

Volvo Group Trucks Uses Zumtobel tunableWhite to Improve Shift Workers' Wellbeing


The biological and emotional effects of light are frequently underestimated. For example, there is hardly any reliable data on the positive effects of human-centric lighting (HCL) in an industrial environment. There is also a lack of information on the positive effects of light on the sleep and cognitive performance of industrial shift workers. When Volvo Group Trucks intended to refurbish the outdated T8 lighting system at their production facility in Ghent, they joined forces with Zumtobel and several prestigious research institutes including KU Leuven in Ghent and the Howest University of Applied Sciences in Bruges to research the effects of human-centric lighting on people working on industrial assembly lines.

Comparison of three different lighting scenarios

The aim of the field study was to compare the effects of three different lighting scenarios on the well-being of shift workers. To do this, Zumtobel equipped a 150-metre-long production line with its TECTON continuous-row lighting system. The first 50 metres were equipped with TECTON C standard LED luminaires, which were mounted on two light lines directly above the production line. The second 50-metre section was equipped with the same lighting, along with additional tunableWhite luminaires and the LITECOM lighting management system, which made it possible to program the lighting system and to vary the light colours and brightness levels. Changing colour temperatures were used to simulate the natural cycle of daylight, which had a sustained, positive effect on employee well-being.

The third section of the production line was illuminated with human-centric lighting. To achieve a vertical illuminance of more than 1,000 lux and thus create the effect of melanopic light, Zumtobel installed an additional third light line. This consisted of a special version of TECTON basic with reflectors and produced the HCL effect through its high vertical illuminance, while thanks to their clever placement in the corridor, the HCL luminaires reflected the light back into the production facility. Zumtobel installed a total of around 600 metres of TECTON light line, with RESCLITE luminaires used for the emergency and safety lighting in all three lighting scenarios.

Field study confirms lighting’s central role

The field study itself was conducted in three groups (one for each lighting scenario), each with around 50 participants. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to accurately measure the differences between the three groups. The study focused on factors such as visual comfort, cognitive function, sleep efficiency, circadian rhythms and physical activity. The results of the field study confirmed previous hypotheses about the relationship between lighting and the cognitive function of industrial shift workers. For example, employees working in HCL were more alert and more focused than the control group. In addition, the former group also demonstrated measurably better sleep efficiency and sleep latency.

Based on the conclusive results of the study and a comprehensive assessment of all three lighting scenarios (standard LED, tunableWhite and HCL), Volvo Group Trucks decided to completely retrofit their Ghent production facility using LED luminaires with tunableWhite. In addition to the positive effects on employee health, other factors such as cost and energy efficiency also played a role in the decision to invest. As part of the rollout, the company has so far equipped more than 100,000 square metres of its facility in Ghent with Zumtobel tunableWhite luminaires including warehouses, offices and shelving, with the retrofitting of further areas also planned.^

The results of the study impressed not only Volvo Group Trucks. The analysis of the collected data and the resulting modernisation of the lighting at the Ghent plant also impressed the DALI Alliance: the project received the popular DALI Award in the 'Industrial' category at the DALI Lighting Awards 2023. The jury praised the use of DALI technologies to improve the well-being of employees, which was achieved through the implementation of TunableWhite in all production areas.

This has a positive effect on the well-being and motivation of our employees and is why Zumtobel tunableWhite is now our go-to technology, which we are also using in our newly opened battery assembly plant for heavy-duty electric trucks in Ghent. In addition, we frequently receive enquiries about our lighting from the Volvo Truck sites in Singapore, Sweden, South Korea and Brazil, and even from our colleagues at Volvo Cars.”

The Zumtobel Group will exhibit at the Forum for the first time. The striking elliptical building with glass fronts is the top spot on the Frankfurt trade fair premises. The 750 square meter booth itself will be based on the re-use principle. This involves, for example, the temporary utilisation of elements from the Zumtobel Group Light Forum, the showroom at the headquarters, which opened in March 2020. New materials used in stand build will be later on reused at other premises, too.

During a time that was marked by the corona pandemic, the Zumtobel Group had chosen not to participate in the leading trade fair. In 2020 and 2022, the company therefore paused its trade fair activities.

“We believe that the trade fair event format is experiencing a revival after years when meetings were predominantly held online. People are increasingly seeking personal contact, new encounters, an on-site experience and products at their fingertips,” CEO Alfred Felder added.

Zumtobel's SCENO luminaire, presented in April 2022, has convinced the jury: 132 design experts from over 20 countries have chosen their favourites in the course of the iF Design Awards 2023. The discreet design of SCENO won the award in the Retail Luminaire/Spotlight and Track category.

Every year, a jury of design experts presents the coveted iF Design Award. The award places emphasis on both exceptional design and innovative strength. One of this year's award-winning products is the SCENO luminaire by Zumtobel, which received an award in the Retail Luminaire/Spotlight and Track category for its design and wide range of applications.

Discreet design and brilliant light
The discreet design of the luminaire leaves the stage to the goods and draws the customer's attention to the products. It also impresses with a timeless exterior and straight lines. SCENO creates uniform and brilliant light at the same time. This is ensured by the specially developed lens technology. Instead of a large light source, Zumtobel relies on a row of miniaturised lighting chambers. Whether seven LEDs or 14, whether fitted on one or two sides: the combination of lenses and glare control honeycombs guarantees high lighting quality and effective glare control with a high level of visual comfort. Retailers can create a stimulating atmosphere with SCENO, turning purely functional shopping into an emotional experience.

Design freedom thanks to four variants and countless application options
In addition to the fixed central section, SCENO has independent wings in which the honeycombs are integrated and which can be adjusted separately and aligned in the store. Depending on requirements, SCENO is available in four different versions: in single or double-leaf design, with seven or 14 honeycombs per side. Depending on the version, the light output varies with 2,000, 3,500, 7,000, 8,000 or 14,000 lumens.

Individually customisable
In the three available housing colours of black, white and silver, SCENO blends discreetly into the sales space. Specially developed for supermarkets and retail areas, it takes human perspectives into account. Because the different optics bring light exactly where it is needed: on the shelves and other presentation areas. The luminaire is available in four different light colours (2,700 Kelvin, 3,000 Kelvin, 3,500 Kelvin, 4,000 Kelvin) to emphasise the colours and details of different goods. Especially for the fresh food counter, there is also a MEAT module that authentically brings out red tones of food, does not falsify colours and gives an impression of special freshness.

SCENO also for the office
But SCENO does not only cut a fine figure in retail. This year, SCENO's scope of application was extended to include office spaces, after all, many companies want to bring their employees back to the office. Concepts such as New Work, which rely on open floor plans and variable room layouts, help here. Whether creative in the collaboration zone or concentrated at an individual workstation: SCENO offers a flexible lighting solution that meets changing visual tasks and usage requirements in the office.

If the office design changes, so does the light. SCENO has individually rotatable and swivellable light modules for maximum flexibility. Even more design freedom is provided by combining it with track systems: For workstations, the use of SCENO on a 3-phase track is optimal. In collaboration zones, mounting on SUPERSYSTEM tracks is suitable.

SCENO uniquely combines the key themes of flexibility, modularity and brilliant accent lighting in a flat and unobtrusive luminaire design. Two independently adjustable wings as well as rotatable 3-phase track adapters or TECTON adapters enable maximum variability. The two wings can also be individually fitted with different LEDs and optics. Thanks to the specially developed optical construction of lens and reflector, the luminaire generates maximum brilliance on the product while maintaining optimised glare control - also for office lighting.
