Selux Lighting

"Semper lux" - always light. When Hermann Bansbach founds his company in Berlin after the Second World War, the badly destroyed city is almost without electricity and light. Bansbach brings light into the dark times by making life easier for Berliners with a battery charger. He believes that light has a social and cultural significance that goes far beyond the purely economic.

At Selux, we have been asking ourselves how to light places for more than 70 years. How do we create safety, well-being and beauty with light? How do our products work during the day when they are objects in public spaces? The amazing thing is that the answers to these questions are right in front of us. Nature provides us with the answers. In nature, everything is in harmony. Everything complements each other, nothing dominates in the long run. Nature knows no monoculture, nothing is fashionable and everything that does not make sense will disappear in the end. The results are perfect protagonists that exist in interaction with each other and constantly optimise themselves. As a result, a central thought has emerged in our minds: If we celebrate the perfection, intelligence and beauty of nature and take it as our model, many acts derive from it.

We have retained this attitude to this day. We too experience the fascination of bringing people real quality of life with well thought-out lighting concepts. This is how Semperlux became Selux - and how a Berlin craftsman's business became a company that is at home all over the world with 400 dedicated employees and locations in Europe, North America and Australia. From our headquarters in Berlin, Lyon and New York, we drive forward our ideas of an extraordinary future and are convinced that the best solutions are created together, through listening and understanding. Landscapes brought to life with the help of inspiring design. Our mission is to support desigers in creating subtly layered public spaces that are neutral, simple and authentic in form and function. Timeless and integrative spaces that are shared spaces in the truest sense: where behaviour isn’t watched, dictated or manipulated, where people don’t have to follow the herd but can be themselves. We constantly encounter all sorts of natural light without always noticing it: direct and indirect, during the day and at night.

People-friendly lighting is light that takes into account people’s various activities and adapts flexibly to their needs; lighting that reinforces a sense of belonging. Good lighting tools support this. They help to strengthen local identities and improve quality of life. Especially when it comes to outdoor lighting: in daylight, a luminaire is part of the street furnishings, its presence constantly shaping the environment. It is a sculpture. At night, it takes on the role of sunlight, providing security, orientation and directing the view. Luminaires can be discreet or expressive. They can draw people’s gaze onto themselves or onto other objects.

Solar energy thus offers a promising option to cover our civilisation’s energy needs in a solution that is in harmony with the environment and nature. Selux solar luminaires have a modular design and can be operated completely independently: electricity and development costs are eliminated and installation is quick and hassle-free for the surrounding area. This makes the new luminaires particularly suitable for applications where there is no power grid and environments that are sensitive to interventions – such as parks, cycle paths and hiking trails, remote bus stops or car parks, nature reserves, projects with an ecological role model character, temporary areas of use and for municipalities that want to become climate neutral.
