Aircraft landing lights are high intensity lights that are used to provide an indication of a takeoff or landing clearance and increase visibility during ground operations. The spotlights provide visibility aids to the pilots when the aircraft is very low and close to terrain on final approach or during take-off. They are often mounted somewhere on the wings, in the landing gear nacelles, or beneath the fuselage.

Landing lights are normally turned on when the aircraft descends through 10,000 feet on approach and are aimed slightly down to illuminate the runway when the aircraft is about 200 feet above the ground. However, when the use of the landing lights causes pilot disorientation the lights may be switched off. Large aircraft often use three or more landing lights.

LEDs have become the logical choice of light source for aircraft landing lights due to their advantages over traditional light sources including higher luminous efficacy, longer lifetime, solid state durability, smaller size and excellent controllability.
