SaveMoneyCutCarbon, a UK-based lighting and energy specialist company, is partnering with Vyv to bring antimicrobial light technology that is designed to kill viruses to the UK.
Vyv has also recently signed an investment and licence agreement with Middleby Corp to allow the manufacturer conglomerate use the technology within its foodservice appliances.
Tests indicate that Vyv’s antimicrobial UV free light LED technology is effective against viruses as well as bacteria, mould fungi and yeast on surfaces.
Vyv’s visible light technology is said to meet international standards for continuous and unrestricted use 24/7 around people, animals and plants. The antimicrobial LED products have recently been verified, through an independent third-party lab study, to be effective against non-enveloped viruses, which are the most difficult class of virus to kill.
The patented technology utilises light in the 405nm wavelength (outside the UV spectrum) that is said to have been proven through numerous studies to be effective against viruses, bacteria, mould, fungi, and yeast.
A further independent pre-publication study into 405nm visible light demonstrated results destroying SARS-CoV-2 at light levels that could be expected in an overhead lighting situation. This second study reportedly demonstrates efficacy results using ranges of light in the 400-420nm range on inactivating enveloped viruses.
Whilst UV-C solutions provide antimicrobial germicidal disinfection using light, Vyv is said to provide uninterrupted preventative protection against microorganisms through its biotechnology delivered through continuous visible light.
Mark Sait, CEO of SaveMoneyCutCarbon said: “We are both proud and excited to be introducing this groundbreaking light technology to the UK, with its tested efficacy in killing viruses. The overhead LED products can be used in the widest range of environments, where people gather, work and study.
Areas where Vyv lighting can bring continuous antimicrobial protection include: restaurants, venues offices, hospitals, care homes, universities, colleges and schools.
Colleen Costello, Vyv CEO and co-founder, said: “The implications of this are vast because, unlike harmful UV-C light, Vyv’s patented technology can be used continuously and without restriction 24/7 around people, animals and plants. The recent findings of enhanced efficacy against viruses greatly expand the antimicrobial impact delivered to spaces currently protected with Vyv technology, as well as in new spaces. With our overhead LED products, Vyv is already lighting offices, schools and school buses, athletic centres, factories, and hospitals.
“We’re also embedding the same technology in many challenging spaces, including behind elevator buttons, inside consumer products such as humidifiers and bathroom fans, and in airplanes, trains and public buses.”
Sait added: “SaveMoneyCutCarbon has delivered hundreds of LED lighting projects linked to improving building efficiency and now we can use this experience combined with Vyv antimicrobial LED technology to enhance building wellness at a critical time, as we move to a post-lockdown world.”

In a novel development, Vyv's cutting-edge proprietary 405nm LED light technology has been recognized in Nature, the world's leading scientific journal. Recent research published in the rigorously peer-reviewed Nature Scientific Reports has demonstrated the efficacy of Vyv's (formerly Vital Vio) proprietary 405nm violet-blue light in inactivating a wide spectrum of bacterial microbes on food surfaces found in food processing environments without the harmful effects associated with UV light. The application of 405nm light is emerging as a powerful tool in enhancing global food safety.
Unmatched Antimicrobial Power
The study demonstrates that Vyv's proprietary 405nm LED light can effectively neutralize microbes like E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Staphylococcus aureus, reducing bacterial counts by up to 6.3 log CFU on food contact surfaces and packaging materials. This unprecedented result marks a significant step forward in microbe control for the food industry, clinical environments and many more environments with germ challenges. As cited in the publication, these microbes can pose "invasive and potentially life-threatening infections". Weekly contamination headlines additionally highlight the growing issues.
The Power of Non-UV, Chemical-Free Antimicrobial LEDs
As cited in the publication, "Since 405 nm blue light has been shown not to have any long-term detrimental effect on mammalian cells, this treatment can become a useful tool for controlling microbial contamination in food processing and handling facilities without posing a risk to human health."
Vyv's 405nm light technology is a game-changer protected by 60+ patents globally and unlike traditional UV-based or chemical disinfectants, Vyv's non-UV light technology is non-toxic and residue-free, ensuring that food products remain uncompromised in quality for consumption. This breakthrough aligns perfectly with the global push for cleaner, more sustainable food processing methods.
"A Milestone Moment for New Ways to Address Germ Control"
Colleen Costello, CEO of Vyv, hailed the study as a milestone for food safety: "This peer-reviewed publication in Nature confirms what we've always known—Vyv's technology is not just innovative, it's essential. The ability to provide continuous antimicrobial protection without chemicals is the future of food safety and germ control at large. This research not only proves the power of our 405nm LED light but positions Vyv as a leader in delivering cleaner environments for people everywhere."
A Future Without Compromise: Sustainable, Continuous, Always-On Protection
The integration of 405nm light into food processing and packaging systems offers a non-invasive, cost- effective method to enhance antimicrobial protection. This innovation is particularly significant for fresh produce, dairy products, and ready-to-eat foods, where microbial contamination poses specific challenges due to the unique environmental conditions.
Expanding Industry Applications
Already a key player in the food sector, Vyv has designed specific products for the food industry such as their linear lightbar, a linear rounded top slim design fixture which is IP69K rated, that can be used in heavy hose down industrial food processing applications.
